I attended a presentation at Loyola University in New Orleans today by Karla Makatova, a musician from Kazakhstan here on a fellowship from CEC Artslink. A few thoughts from the presentation:
The country is incredibly beautiful. It’s the 4th largest country in the world by size with a population of only 16 million. Every photo looked almost pristine, like the natural beauty of the landscape had never been disrupted.
The music samples that Karla played had an interesting mix of ancient and modern instrumentation. I also found it interesting that Karla is also employed as a tour guide. Like many musicians in the states, artists often must supplement their artistic aspirations with other forms of income.
Thanks to the Thelonious Monk Institute for coordinating Karla’s visit and today’s presentation.
